Auto shows have long been a place for dealers to show off their wares.
And with the exception of a few big brands like Ford and General Motors, most manufacturers at the shows have opted not to show new models.
And it was clear that GM, for example, has not been putting out new models since last year.
“The only time we’ve had any production vehicles since that year was at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show,” said Dave Condon, senior vice president of GM and GMC.
“I don’t think anyone thought it was going to be a problem.”
So GM and Chrysler announced that they are canceling all of their auto shows in 2019, with the notable exception of the Detroit Auto Shows.
“There is no reason to hold a show for a year and a half if you don’t want to be there,” said Condon.
And that includes GMC, which has announced plans to start showing new vehicles in 2019.
Chrysler has announced that it will not have a production facility for the 2019 model year, and it will only be showing a limited number of models at its plant in North Charleston, South Carolina.
So you’ll have to go to a dealership to get a 2019 Jeep Wrangler for the first time, and you’ll be waiting for another year for the new 2019 Chrysler 200.
Auto shows are a prime time for auto makers to show their latest models, and Chrysler and GM are hoping to draw a lot of attention to the new models by showing them in a way that is not a marketing gimmick.
It’s not going to make you go buy a new Jeep Wranglers, but it will draw a few hundred people to the show.
But is it good for the auto show business?
Automakers are already spending millions of dollars on promotional materials at shows like the one this weekend.
They’ve spent $4.3 billion on the 2014 Detroit Auto show alone.
“It’s definitely something they need to look at,” said Mark Mano, managing director of auto marketing and marketing at The B. Riley Group, which represents the auto industry.
“And we think the best way to do that is to make sure you’re getting the best product you can for the consumer, and not spending money on advertising to promote your brand.”
If Chrysler is looking to make a big splash at the show, it’s going to have to come up with a new concept for the 2018 model year.
The company has announced it will unveil the 2019 Chrysler 300, but that is unlikely to be the first concept car that the company has shown at a show.
The last concept car to be shown at an auto show was a 2009 Jeep Cherokee.
Mano said it was not surprising that the brand would be reluctant to reveal a new vehicle at the 2018 show.
“Chrysler is trying to avoid a lot more than the brand name and the brand image is just that it’s too difficult to do,” Mano explained.
“You can’t get that into an auto booth and get a product that is all about that, and then show it.”
Mano pointed to the brand’s new crossover SUV, the JK Wrangler.
The SUV is being shown in the Detroit auto show for the very first time.
And the company says it’s trying to be more transparent with consumers about the brand, by offering a new trailer to get consumers excited about the vehicle.
“When we unveil something new, we make it clear that it is a new product,” said Mano.
“We try to make it a bit of a shocker for the audience, and we do try to show people that it can’t be just the name on the back of the car.”
In other words, Chrysler has to show that its new model is a good deal.
But Mano also noted that the 2019 Jeep 300 is expected to be “better than its predecessor,” the JJ Wrangler, which was the first Jeep to go on sale in 2006.
“That was the year that Jeep really took off,” said Joe Besser, vice president and chief marketing officer for Chrysler Group.
“But it was also the year the Wrangler was a product, and the SUV was a concept.”
The Jeep 300 will not be the last Jeep model to be introduced at a new auto show.
In 2019, Chrysler will introduce a new midsize crossover SUV called the Cherokee, which will be the second new vehicle from the company in 20 years.
And in 2020, the company will unveil a new version of the Jeep Compass that will be based on the JZ Wrangler and will be a much better value for consumers.
The new Compass will be offered with a higher trim level, a smaller price tag and an improved safety rating.
The Compass will have more cargo space, a better front-seat storage system, a new steering wheel and other improvements, according to Chrysler.
The 2019 Jeep Compass will not make its debut at a dealership at the 2019 Detroit Auto shows
